Maggie Lena Walker, first woman Black or White to charter a bank in the United States. Born immediately following the Civil War, she rose from poverty to become an entrepreneur, philanthropist, community activist, and a crusader for Negro and women's rights in America. Walker's bank is still in existence today in Richmond, Virginia.
